Have you heard of Microcurrent? It’s another type of electrical facial treatment that is offered in a spa facial.

Microcurrent is used to treat aging skin. It’s been a popular spa treatment that is making its way to the consumer market.

You can even give yourself a microcurrent treatment at home now – with a handheld microcurrent device, such as the Nuface Trinity.

What Is Microcurrent?

As the name implies, microcurrent is a type of electrical current. It is a low-level current that is safe and painless (in case you’re concerned about it hurting you).

What the current does is send electrical impulses to muscles, which stimulates the muscle fibers. In effect, the current is helping muscle maintain tone and re-educating aging muscles.

This helps lift and firm skin when this is done over a period of time correctly.

Microcurrent also stimulates energy production by increasing ATP (Adenosine Triphosphate), a chemical that is produced in the mitochondria to provide cellular energy to the body.

Benefits of Microcurrent On Skin

The main benefit of microcurrent is muscle toning. It is used on both the face and neck.

Microcurrent can also help with lifting the parts of the face that sag, such as the jowls and upper eyes.

The electrical impulses also stimulate circulation and lymphatic drainage. This has multiple benefits on skin.

Better circulation means nutrients are delivered more efficiently to skin cells, and cellular waste is carried away more efficiently too. Both of these processes improve the skin’s overall health and complexion.

Lymphatic drainage is the removal of lymph fluid. And what is lymph? Lymph is a fluid that circulates throughout the body. It contains white blood cells, excess fluid, waste products, and sometimes harmful cells (e.g. bacteria, cancer cells).

So lymph drainage is a way for the skin to detoxify itself. But with age, lymph removal can get sluggish and pool in certain areas of the face and body, such as under the eyes (this is one of the causes of puffy eyes).

Lymph drainage can be accelerated through massage or microcurrent. And you can find both treatments offered in a spa facial.

Other Uses of Microcurrent

Microcurrent has been used in other health fields for muscle re-habilitation and wound healing.

Microcurrent is also used to increase product penetration, a process known as iontophoresis (see Intro to Electrical Facial Treatments for an explanation).

Microcurrent Devices For At Home Use

Nuface Mini

This is my new gadget, the Nuface Mini, which is an at-home microcurrent device sold to consumers.

Nuface is a maker of handheld beauty devices. The Trinity, priced at $325 USD, is the full size version. The Mini, a smaller device priced at $199, is the one shown here.

It’s nice to see the pricing coming down for a handheld device like this. Devices are a big growth area in beauty. Especially in certain markets, such as East Asia.

While the price point is still prohibitive for many people at this point, I believe devices will become more affordable and widespread in the not so distant future.

After I use this for a while, I’ll share my thoughts about it over on Instagram. So stay tuned!
