Do you have trouble remembering to apply sunscreen? What about re-applying it when you’ve been out in the sun for a while? Do you worry about getting skin cancer? How would you like to never sunburn again?

Now you can let a wearable tech device do all your UV homework and reminding. No more forgetting or guessing!

The new Raymio wearable UV sensor will keep you safe from the sun.

What Does Raymio Do?

Raymio is a wristband that you wear whenever you’re outside. It monitors your sun activity and sends you alerts, reminders, and tips to keep you protected from the sun.

  • It gives you the UV forecast so you are always prepared (even on cloudy days because UVA rays shine every day).
  • It warns you when the UV index has become dangerously high.
  • It lights up and flashes red when you need to re-apply sunscreen.
  • It tells you when to seek shade or put on a hat.

The wristband is built with directional sensors that keep track of UVA and UVB levels all day, 24/7. These sensors track the amount of UV exposure you are getting exactly where you are. So it’s much more accurate than looking up a generic UV forecast from a weather website.

The band connects to an app on your mobile phone (iOS or Android), which keeps track of your sun exposure history and habits. It also provides helpful sun protection tips for your skin type.

What’s nice about a band like this is that you don’t need to keep looking at your phone, unlike low-tech UV apps that are made for mobile phones. When the band flashes red, you know it’s an important alert that requires you to take action.

If you want, the app will connect you with other family members and friends so that all of you can share information with each other.

Raymio comes in black and other colors too – white, yellow, and blue.

What I Like About Raymio

I personally love the cool and elegant design of the band. It has all the trademarks of clean, modern Danish design.

Raymio white on girl's wristI think it’s the perfect balance of unisex – something that can look good on a man or woman. One problem I have with many wearables and gadgets is they look too “manly” for my taste.

This band is thin and subtle, blending into the arm easily so it doesn’t draw too much attention or look chunky. I can see myself wearing this with a bunch of different outfits without worrying about it clashing.

The band also looks lightweight, flexible, and comfortable – loose enough to avoid clamping to my wrist like some other activity trackers do.

Who’s Behind Raymio?

Raymio is a Danish startup founded by a group of students from The University of Copenhagen. The startup has an experienced management and engineering team, and the Danish government is co-financing the startup.

If the government is behind it, you know the data will be reliable. In fact, the company has partnered with the Danish Meteorological Institute for UV index satellite data.

And full disclosure – I learned about Raymio from my friend, a very talented designer who is one of the co-founders and designers of the band. Naturally, I am biased because I love his design work. But the utility of this band is what I find most compelling.

Where To Buy Raymio

Raymio is not available in stores yet but is on pre-order now. The company is currently running a funding campaign on Indiegogo, a crowdfunding site.

Crowdfunding is a way for startups to raise money from potential customers. The funds raised help the company finish developing a product and bring it to market. When you contribute to a crowdfunding campaign, you get something back in return – typically the product at a largely discounted price (early bird special rate).

I bought a Raymio for $45 plus a shipping fee ($10 for USA). The $45 is my funding ‘contribution,’ and in exchange I will receive a new Raymio when it ships next spring, March 2016. (Raymio will ship anywhere in the world.)

What’s nice about the campaign is that you are guaranteed to receive a Raymio or your money back (a full refund) if the funding goal isn’t met.

Here is the Indiegogo campaign page for Raymio where you can learn more about Raymio and place an order. The funding campaign ends on November 2.

It’s All About Prevention

If you care or worry about sunburn and skin cancer prevention, I highly recommend you take a look! It’s an investment in your skin that isn’t too high if you consider it in the context of other beauty products or devices.

It’s the cost of a basic moisturizer, which you would use up in 3 months. But the wristband lasts. And because it’s something that other people in your family can wear, it could be an economical investment too.

I personally cannot wait to receive mine! You probably know by now – if it helps protect skin, it’s something I will value and be eager try!
