Time to take a break from shoveling. The blizzard has dumped 24 inches of snow here.  I just made this carrot juice to re-antioxidize. Isn’t it a beautiful color?

Blizzard Juice ingredients: carrots, tomato, kiwi, orange, apple, celery, ginger.

Making fresh juice is a great way to clean out the fridge, which is partly why I made this. A pile of carrots has been sitting too long in the fridge.

I will admit, it is more tempting to reach for hot cocoa in weather like this. But I have already stocked up on winter comfort food and some junk food for later. In other words, I’m making myself eat the healthy stuff first 🙂

Did You Know Snow Increases Your UV Exposure?

The sun is shining, and the sky is very bright because of the snow everywhere. The snow is reflecting UVA and UVB rays (because of its white color).

With this additional reflection, my skin is getting MUCH more UV exposure than it would on a non-snowy day (this is how much more).

This tells me: More antioxidants are needed!

SKIN TIP

Apply antioxidants before AND after sun exposure. Antioxidants don’t last long. They get used up quickly quenching the free radicals generated by the sun.

You need to replenish the antioxidants in your skin AFTER SUN EXPOSURE too. The common prescription is to apply antioxidants before sun exposure, which is a given. But what is less understood is the need to replenish immediately afterward.

Free radical activity continues after you return indoors. In other words, they’re still attacking your skin even if you’re not in the sun. In some cases, they’re still attacking the next day. Free radicals generated by tobacco smoke is an example.

So it is always helpful to build a ‘reserve’ of antioxidants in your skin.

Since it is not always practical or possible to re-apply skincare during the day, go the food or juice route. Choose a snack that is rich in antioxidants!
